Kabbalah Outpost (Bookstore and Classroom)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
The Kabbalah Center’s new Williamsburg outpost is a 2000 sq ft space visible from the street. To accommodate a program of a bookstore and classroom by day, and a larger event space at night, the design proposes a mobile shelving system to reconfigure the space as needed. Four large pixelated shelves pivot on end supports and interlock flush again the walls when closed, and divide the front space into reading|seating zones while open, with a range of options in-between. A large foldable glass partition separates the bookstore and classroom space, but can disappear as needed. The layout creates a variety of different social settings for seating, both individually and in groups. The custom steel and glass storefront’s slim profile allows for maximum visibility from the street.
